Movie and TV Show

My 2021 TV Watchlist

Hi all, it’s Sabrina!  I know it’s nearing the end of January, but I still have some 2021 goals to discuss, and today I wanted to talk about some TV shows I want to at least start this year.  I have a few categories: shows I want to finish, shows I want to continue and finally, shows I want to start.  I haven’t talked too much about TV shows on the blog, but today I’m changing that!  And with that, let’s get started!

* Synopses are from Google or IMDB!*

TO FINISH

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

SYNOPSIS: Agent Phil Coulson leads a team of highly skilled agents from the global law-enforcement organisation known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together, they combat extraordinary and inexplicable threats.

I promise this is the only show I am cheating with, because I have actually already finished watching it (this year still!) as of writing this.  But!  It is on my Favourite TV Shows Of All Time list, so I had to include it anyway.  This show has some of my favourite characters and storylines that I never see coming.  I am fairly upset that it ended after seven years, because I have been watching since the beginning and as such, it has been a part of my life for a long time (ie…7 whole years), but I am glad now that it got a worthy finale that didn’t cause me too much pain, lol.  If you like action and drama and twists and characters you can root for, I highly recommend this show.

The Punisher

SYNOPSIS: After the murder of his family, Marine veteran Frank Castle becomes the vigilante known as “The Punisher,” with only one goal in mind: to avenge them.

Committing to watching shows with my family members always means I have to compromise on how often we can watch an episode, but when it comes to The Punisher, which I have been watching with my brother, it’s getting to be a bit ridiculous!  I have only three episodes left of the show, and the last time we watched one was in April last year.  Still, whether I have to stop watching with my brother or not, I am going to finish this show in 2021.  I love almost everything about it, though I never thought I would be into something with so much graphic violence (see also: The Old Guard) and it’s also fairly predictable – though I suppose that actually worked in the show’s favour for me because I was smug about guessing certain things 😅

Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon

SYNOPSIS: A woman born with superhuman strength is hired by the CEO of a gaming company, to be his bodyguard.

As you may know, Ruzi is a big fan of k-dramas, and last year I asked for some recommendations and this show was one of them!  I am about 50% through it at this point and enjoying it (for the most part – I really don’t like the main character’s mother and certain plot points surrounding her being played for laughs instead of taken seriously).  The difficulty for me is that the episodes are super long and because I need to see the subtitles, I can’t reasonably do anything else while I am watching, which is always hard for me.  I do love the main character though and who I suspect is her endgame love interest – I hope I find out soon enough if he is, by finishing the show!

How To Get Away With Murder

SYNOPSIS: Annalise Keating, a criminal defence lawyer and professor, teaches a group of aspiring law students. However, their lives alter when they get entangled in an aberrant murder.

I have stopped and started watching this show a few times since it began, but I know it’s ended now, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak.  I did enjoy the show while I was watching, but it was hard to continue knowing that every season just brought more pain to the characters and was possibly going to become even more convoluted than the last.  Still, I have two friends who are always pushing me to continue with the series and I would like to know how all the mysteries wrap up.

TO CONTINUE

Friends

SYNOPSIS: Follow the lives of six reckless adults living in Manhattan, as they indulge in adventures which make their lives both troublesome and happening.

This is another show that has been forced on me rather than me choosing it for myself, lol.  Now that it’s on Australian Netflix, the requests were getting more frequent, so I just decided to try it.  I’ve watched about ten episodes at this point, and it’s good enough and I have laughed at it a few times – though I admit I prefer to just have it on in the background while I’m doing something else.  I’ve realised I don’t particularly like any of the characters either, which makes me less inclined to watch it often, but I am going to keep pushing through!

The Legend of Korra

SYNOPSIS: Avatar Korra fights to keep Republic City safe from the evil forces of both the physical and spiritual worlds.

I don’t know if I have mentioned this before, but I love Avatar: The Last Airbender a whole lot, yet I have never watched its successor – until now.  I’ve watched about three episodes and I’m experiencing mixed emotions – not to do with the show’s quality – which is, so far, great – but because my all my faves are either dead or old 😭 Also Korra has been making some silly choices, but I am assuming she will grow over the series.  Fingers crossed!

The Office (US)

SYNOPSIS: A motley group of office workers go through hilarious misadventures at the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company.

I adore both Parks and Recreation (my favourite show ever) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine so it stands to reason that I should enjoy The Office as well.  I watched a few episodes a couple of years back, but as I was watching with both my brother and sister we had a lot of scheduling issues 🙄 I’m yet to ask if they want to try watching it again, but I suspect I’ll be going in alone this time.  Still, I am confident that I will like the show.

Bridgerton

SYNOPSIS: During the Regency era in England, eight close-knit siblings of the powerful Bridgerton family attempt to find love.

This show made the list even though after one and a bit episodes I’m not sure if I’m going to continue because it’s so slow, lol.  The main reason I’m watching this is the first place is because it’s trendy and all my friends are watching it, so I want to be able to join in the conversations.  Also, an actress from Derry Girls, another show I’ve enjoyed, is in it.  If I don’t enjoy the second episode a whole lot though, I’m probably going to drop this one.

US Survivor

SYNOPSIS: A reality show where a group of contestants are stranded in a remote location with little more than the clothes on their back. The lone survivor of this contest takes home a million dollars.

Now I know I have mentioned Survivor on the blog before a few times, because I got really into the Australian version last year.  I’ve watched several episodes of what I believe is season one of the US version at this stage, and I can already see how different it is from Australia!  It’s possible that the show has just changed over time and this season is quite different from the later ones in the US as well, but I guess I’ll see as I keep watching the show!

TO START

She Was Pretty + Romance is A Bonus Book

SYNOPSIS (She Was Pretty): After a complete reversal of fortune and looks, childhood sweethearts reunite for the first time in 15 years as employees at a fashion magazine.
SYNOPSIS (Romance is a Bonus Book):  A gifted writer who’s the youngest editor-in-chief ever at his publishing company becomes enmeshed in the life of a former copywriter desperate for a job.

These are both k-drama recommendations I also got from Ruzi when she suggestion Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, so I will probably wait until I have finished that one before starting either of these.  I don’t know much about them except that they sound cute and I’m hoping I’ll enjoy them! Also, forgive me if the gifs aren’t from the shows, they’re just what showed up first on Giphy 😅

The Mandalorian

SYNOPSIS: After the defeat of the Empire at the hands of Rebel forces, a lone bounty hunter operating in the Outer Rim, away from the dominion of the New Republic, goes on many surprising and risky adventures.

I’ll be honest: the main reason I want to watch this show is to see that baby Yoda in action.  There is just something about that thing that gets to me 🥰 I watched all the Star Wars movies when I was pretty young (obviously not the new ones – I’ve only seen The Force Awakens (didn’t like it) and Rogue One (really liked it) out of those) so I don’t really remember that much about them and to be honest, I don’t know if they’re worth the effort of having a movie marathon because I know at least one of them bores me to death 😶 Still, I would like to watch this TV show and it has been recommended specifically to me by a few of my friends.  The other issue is that I don’t have Disney+, but I’m hoping to change that soon, at least for a few months.

WandaVision

SYNOPSIS: Living idealized suburban lives, super-powered beings Wanda and Vision begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

Before this post you may not have known this, but considering this is the third Marvel show on this list you have probably guessed by now: I am super into superheroes, and unfortunately Marvel ones especially.  So of course, I want to watch WandaVision.  I have seen glimpses of the previews for it, and it looks like a fun show with some interesting quirks.  Plus, I have only seen good reviews so far!

Schitt’s Creek

SYNOPSIS: A married couple suddenly go bankrupt and the only remaining asset they have is an ugly small town named Schitt’s Creek.

This is going to be a stretch considering all the other shows on this list plus I have a feeling this show will take a few episodes for me to get invested.  Still, it is, I think, the kind of show I am in the mood for this year and I know a lot of people love it (including Vera!), so I have faith that it will work for me!

What do you think?

Have you watched any of these shows? What did you think of them? Are you planning on watching any of these in 2021? Let me know!

  1. Strong Woman De Bong Soon is so CUTE!! That’s like the only kdrama I’ve watched 😅 I gotta watch the office!!! Great list 😊

  2. I love Strong Woman but I agree with the episodes being too long- it’s my problem with k-drama in general haha! My goal this year is mainly to finish all my unfinished series: I already finished Suspicious Partner this month, so I have Crash Landing on You, Versailles, Empress Ki and Reply 1988 left 😀

  3. I started watching Bridgerton this week and I am HOOKED! It’s such an escapist show and so pleasing to watch. I love the costumes and sets as much as the ridiculous plotlines. My husband enjoys it too and we have been having a good time making fun of the characters in our bad English accents throughout each episode, lol. It’s definitely soapy but it’s so fun.

  4. Love your watchlist! Friends is such a feel good show. I would deffo recommend finishing Bridgerton – I’m so jealous that you get to watch it for the first time! I absolutely adored it and I’m not normally a person that would enjoy that type of show. I’ve also been watching the office lately 🙂 xx

  5. You have so many great shows on here! The Mandalorian is fabulous, and season two is even better than season one in my opinion. It’s really easy to get through.

Schitt’s Creek is hilarious!! It’s also easy to consume, and so wholesome and lovely.

I’m currently on season five of The Office and really enjoying it. Although, I do think Parks and Rec is better.

And YES American Survivor!!! You already know my feelings about this lol!!! I hope you love it. My favourite seasons are Heroes vs. Villains and Game Changers.

    1. Glad to hear that!! I am so excited to watch The Mandalorian and Schitt’s Creek – that’s good to hear that the former is easy to watch. Also lol, I don’t think anything will ever surpass Parks and Rec for me, so I’m okay hearing that, but still glad you are enjoying The Office.
Haha I am really enjoying American Survivor – I’m up to my third season but unfortunately I didn’t have as many seasons available to me as I thought so I had to skip seasons 3-5. I just finished season 6 (The Amazon) yesterday and am moving onto 7 (Pearl Islands) ASAP! I have heard so many good things about Heroes vs Villains so I looking forward to … eventually… getting to watch that season haha.

  6. I feel the same way about Friends 😂 When it first dropped on UK Netflix I got sick of being recommended it all the time so I bit the bullet and watched it but I definitely thought it was used as background noise than anything I would actively watch. I’m currently rewatching The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and I really want to start Ash vs Evil Dead soon but Netflix is missing a season of it so I’m putting that one off for now.

  7. HTGAWM is one of my favourites and you definitely need to finish it… The ending though 😭 I love ATLA/TLOK, I think Korra really does grow throughout the series. And omg I feel the same way about Friends, I kinda started watching when it landed on NZ Netflix but I discovered that I’m really not that into it?
