In this house we stan Taylor Swift. Yup. And with her being out in full force recently teasing her new album (Lover, out August 23rd), I decided there could possibly be no better time to this tag than right now.
While I couldn’t find the original creator of this book tag (and since it’s quite old) I decided to choose 11 questions from it and incorporate one from the Taylor Swift Reputation Book Tag created by Mollie the Reader, while also creating my own question based on her latest single, You Need to Calm Down, so there’s 13 questions in all. See what I did there?
1. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
A book or series that you were pretty sure you were in love with, but then you wanted to break up with.
“I used to think that we were forever ever, ever
And I used to say, never say never”
The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater. I was quite surprised myself that this is the series that came to my mind first, but while I loved it wholeheartedly while reading it and for quite a while after too, I’ve grown to be indifferent about it now. I mean, I barely remember what even happened throughout the course of four books, so! Break up. Gotta admit the characters were still pretty memorable, though.
Pick a book with a RED cover.
” Losing him was blue like I’d never known
Missing him was dark gray all alone
Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you never met
But loving him was red.”
Why pick one when I can pick two? The Epic Crush of Genie Lo by F. C. Yee and The Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge. These are both books I’ve been meaning to read for a long time and me picking them as my answer here is more of a way to remind myself that I’m yet to read them than anything else.
3. The Best Day
Pick a book that makes you feel nostalgic.
” I don’t know why all the trees change in the fall
I know you’re not scared of anything at all
Don’t know if Snow White’s house is near or far away
But I know I had the best day with you today.”
Anything Enid Blyton or Meg Cabot. They were both such favorites growing up and I always find myself being super nostalgic when I think of them!
4. Love Story
Pick a book with forbidden love.
“So I sneak out to the garden to see you
We keep quiet ’cause we’re dead if they knew
So close your eyes, escape this town for a little while.”
A Girl Like That by Tanaz Bhathena! The MC is Zoroastrian and the story was haunting and hard-hitting and all the more so because it’s #ownvoices!
5. I Knew You Were Trouble
Pick a book with a bad character you couldn’t help but love.
“I knew you were trouble when you walked in
So shame on me now
Flew me to places I’d never been
So you put me down, oh.”
Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter? I spent the hugest part of the series hating him (obvs) but towards the end, yeah, I appreciated his character arc and…I’d even say I loved him, albeit a tiny bit, yes.
Pick a book that someone ruined the ending for.
“Did some things you can’t speak of
But at night you live it all again
You wouldn’t be shattered on the floor now
If only you had seen what you know now then.”
This is a preeeetty funny question because if there’s anyone ruining things for me, it’s me. Myself. I have absolutely zero self-control and if things get too tense or if I’m too curious, I’d fully well sneak a peek at the ending. Spoiler warnings on reviews? Nah, I pay no heed.
7. Everything Has Changed
Pick a character from a book who goes through extensive character development.
“Come back and tell me why
I’m feeling like I’ve missed you all this time
And meet me there tonight
And let me know that it’s not all in my mind.”
Khalid from Ayesha at Last. He challenged a lot of the things he was brought up to believe in, was open to criticism and was willing to change himself for the better when necessary and…a Muslim Darcy, y’all! His character arc wasn’t the smoothest, maybe, but he was great.
8. You Belong With Me
Pick your most anticipated book release.
“Standing by and waiting at your back door
All this time how could you not know
Baby, you belong with me.”
I’ve been so, so out of touch with new releases and this is MG, but Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga! I absolutely loved the author’s My Heart and Other Black Holes, and given the sensitive nature of the topics dealt in this new book, I just know she would do them justice!
9. Forever and Always
Pick your favourite book couple.
“‘Cause it rains in your bedroom, everything is wrong
It rains when you’re here and it rains when you’re gone
‘Cause I was there when you said forever and always.”
This is a tough one but Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky from the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series. I can’t think of a cuter couple. #Goals
10. Come Back, Be Here
Pick the book you would least like to lend out, for fear of missing it too much.
“I told myself don’t get attached,
But in my mind I play it back,
Spinning faster than the plane that took you,
And this is when the feeling sinks in,
I don’t wanna miss you like this.”
All my books? Not particularly because I’d miss them, but I just don’t trust anyone around my books. I’m just…VERY protective of them, ok?
11. Stay Stay Stay
A book you wanted to go on forever.
“You took the time to memorize me
My fears, my hopes and dreams
I just like hanging out with you, all the time.”
Crazy Rich Asians. Well, I’m speaking of the whole series tbh. There were so many characters, so many storylines and SO MUCH going on and despite being 3 books long, I still need more. There’s scope for more development, I feel, and should a new book be announced (though it’s highly unlikely), I’d be the first to sign up for it!
12. Dancing With Our Hands Tied
A book that had you tied in from the first sentence.
“I could’ve spent forever with your hands in my pockets
Picture of your face in an invisible locket
You said there was nothing in the world that could stop it
I had a bad feeling…”
“Khai was supposed to be crying. He knew he was supposed to be crying. Everyone else was. But his eyes were dry.”
This is from the prologue of The Bride Test by Helen Hoang, but wait till you see how the first chapter starts!
“Scrubbing toilets wasn’t usually this interesting. My had done it so many times she had a streamlined routine by now. Spray with poison everywhere. Pour poison inside. Scrub, scrub, scrub, scrub, scrub. Wipe, wipe, wipe. Flush. Done in less than two minutes. If they had a toilet-cleaning contest, My would be a top contender. Not today, though. The noises in the next stall kept distracting her.”
Okay, so this wasn’t technically one sentence, but I need to make more people pick this one up, so whatever it takes, I guess!
13. You Need to Calm Down
Pick a book that you just can’t shut up about.
“You are somebody that we don’t know
But you’re coming at my friends like a missile
Why are you mad,
When you could be GLAAD?”
A recent read that made me bawl my eyes out and made my heart positively ache at times, but also feel all the feels: Love From A to Z by S. K. Ali. Watch out for my review soon, but this honestly was such a beautiful story with very strong protagonists and is definitely my most favorite book by the author yet (though Saints and Misfits was pretty darn perfect too!). I just can’t keep calm!
That’s it. It’s been ages since I tried a book tag, so I had tons of fun doing this one! Consider yourself tagged, if interested, and be sure to let me know so I can check out your answers too!
Let’s talk about all the books I’ve mentioned here (and Taylor Swift, of course!) in the comments below!
